Tips for artwork

Follow these guidelines to avoid delay by having artwork and photos returned for being unsuitable.

If sending original art work

  • The images can be painted, collaged or drawn (plain pencil tends to be too light, try to use felt pens bold lines and colour)
  • They can be of anything you like, a house, pattern, a baby’s hand or footprint. It’s up to you and your child.
  • No larger than A4 (21cm x 29cm Approx)
  • No smaller than A6 (10.5cm x 14.8cm approx) (4” x 6” approx)
  • Try to make sure the image is clean with no unwanted marks on it.
  • Put the name of the artist on the back.
  • Indicate which way is the top of the image on the back.
  • Oh, and NO Glitter!

If sending a photo of the artwork

  • You can take a photo of a piece of artwork larger than A4 with this option, as it will be reduced to the size of a photo.
  • If using a digital camera, set your camera to a high resolution / best quality / fine quality.
  • Files of the artwork must be saved in JPEG (jpg) or TIFF (tiff) format. Files must be RGB at 300dpi (dots per inch)
  • Don’t use flash. Turn off the flash option on your camera.
  • For best results take the photo in natural light. This is easiest outside.
  • Don’t take the photo in full sunlight as this can cast shadows. Bright overcast days give the best type of even light.
  • Place the artwork flat against a wall at eye height so as not to get distortion.
  • Or place the artwork on a flat surface like the ground or table and bend 90 degrees (right angle) over the top of it. Watch out for any shadows cast from your body or camera.
  • Ensure there are no obstructions in the way of the art - eg a blade of grass or a finger!

Tips for photos

Tips and advice on portrait photos

  • Take the photo of the child on his/her own.
  • Smile!
  • It just needs to be a head and shoulders shot.
  • Have a plain background, against a plain wall, plain curtains or outside.
  • Make sure the child is in focus.
  • Make sure no obstacles are in front of the face.
  • It works best if the child is smiling and looking at the camera.

We like this option. Many companies offer a similar service, but not all offer the option of the artist’s photo on the back of the card. Family and friends think it’s great.

A copy of the photo you provide will be transferred into black and white and may be cropped for the final design.

Peace of Mind

It can be quite worrying sending images of children (we know, we have children ourselves). Rest assured that the cards are only sold to you. No one else can order your cards. When ordered, a unique reference is allocated to your cards.

If you re-order within the 3-month period you will need to quote your reference number. The reorder will only be delivered to the named person who raised the original order at the original address.

  • Unless you state otherwise on the order form, your child’s images and information are digitally stored for a maximum of three months from the date of the order, for the option of re-ordering. After three months the digital files are destroyed. Rainbow Cow stores one card on file for reference only with every order made.
  • All original images and photos will be sent back to you with the delivery of your cards.
  • We do not share your details with any other company.
